Executive Director’s Report…

               Our National Headquarters Partnership

3816 Caroline Street ~ Houston, TX

Now located at the famed Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston, TX. We are delighted to be partnered with such a prestigious Museum and associated with a great historical heritage. Long overdue, in December 2017, thanks to Trooper Henri Legendre (An Original Buffalo Soldier, now deceased) we celebrated the beginning of a long and prosperous partnership.

The Executive Director has the responsibility of overseeing The National Associations Operations and raising funds/securing sponsorships/grants for the association as well seeking out viable partnerships that help us elevate our National Association status in the public arena.

With this partnership and new vision comes the appointment of Our new Executive Director, Lifetime Association member Trooper Nina Amos. Meet Nina:

Trooper Nina Amos is a life member and a member of the National Association for over 18 years, and is the President and Founder of the Greater Denver CO Chapter Buffalo Soldiers, 9th & 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association. As a member of the National Association, it was my honor to start the Jr. Buffalo Soldiers Program and successfully integrate some of the youth programs of the Denver Chapter into the National Association, two being The Jr. Buffalo Soldier Honor Guard and The Jr. Buffalo Soldiers National Youth Summit.

Additional Service to the Association:

  • Appointed by Past National President, Trooper Derrick Davis as the first ever National Youth Coordinator which became the Buffalo Soldiers Corp under Past National President, Trooper Willie Edley.

  • After serving in this position for 2 years I was elected as the National Secretary, the position which I held for 6 years,

  • Then elected National 1stVice President, the 1st Woman to hold this office,  she served in for the last 4 years.

  • Among Trooper Amos’ many talents and service to the National Association she also serves as the National Webmaster and is instrumental in keeping the Association updated with the technology that serves it’s needs.

Her Chapter was started at the urging of 2 of the nations “oldest living original buffalo soldiers” then 99-year-old Trooper Turl Covington, now deceased and 94-year-old Trooper Harold Cole also deceased. She is a direct descendent of a Buffalo Soldier, and their vision is her vision:

To Honor the great legacy and contributions of these Great American Heroes, and continue to enhance our Adult programs and activities. In addition:

  • To maintain and help the association as a viable business entity with lasting sustainable partnerships and funding,

  • To continue enhance our youth programs to make sure our nation’s youth are part of this association so they can understand the existence, legacy, valuable history and contributions for which we are passionate about. Our youth are vital to our future and legacy!

The National 9th & 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association has recognized and presented her with numerous awards for her contributions and service to the association. In 2014, her chapter successfully hosted the 148th Annual Reunion Conference for the National 9th & 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association. For this reunion they created the “Hall of Honor”, an educational display with biographies and photos that recognized and paid tribute to our 29 living “Original Buffalo Soldiers”. They also designed the Buffalo Soldier Medal of Honor which was presented to 17 living “Original Buffalo Soldiers” by their Jr. Troopers. The Hall of Honor has been displayed and seen at 2 other National Reunions.

They were honored to create a Bronze Memorial Plaque with The State of Colorado and pay tribute to Trooper Cathay Williams, the only known “Female Buffalo Soldier”.  This plaque hangs in the Trinidad Colorado State History Museum Memorial Garden, Trinidad CO., the place where she lived and is believed to have died.

Trooper Amos represents and believe that the Buffalo Soldiers have truly given us “A Glorious Past, and have Blazed a Brilliant Future” with their “Fierce Fighting Spirits” and the ultimate sacrifice of their lives that we can forever be proud of.

In addition to her Executive Director responsibilities, Trooper Amos, will oversee the National Museum partnership and activities, new grants and fundraising projects, and seek out new sustainable viable sponsorships. She will also continue as the National Webmaster and work diligently to bring new technology benefits to the National Association.

We are truly honored that Trooper Amos accepted this appointment from the National Executive Board of Directors.

This page will be updated regularly with viable information for our Executive Director! Stay tuned!
